A South Korean TV network has apologized after receiving criticism for the country's icons and captions featured in the opening ceremony broadcast of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. MBC has been criticized for using inappropriate icons and captions to describe the country of origin of athletes participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
MBC uses pizza to represent Italy, riots for Haiti, Chernobyl for Ukraine, and salmon for Norway. In a statement to the Marshall Islands, MBC described it as "once a nuclear test site for the United States".
Then, Syria as a country that has a "civil war that lasted for 10 years".
The icon and description were raised when athletes from those countries entered the stadium in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, on Friday (7/23/2021) local time. After receiving a lot of criticism online for the offending icon and caption, MBC issued an apology.
"Inappropriate images and captions were used to introduce some of the stories. We apologize to these countries including Ukraine and our viewers," mbc said, as reported by Japan Times on Saturday (7/24/2021). The opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was held amid fears of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thus, applying a number of Covid-19 restriction rules, which makes the atmosphere quieter than previous years. However, the ceremony is still held with hope, tradition, and movement togetherness. Japan's global sports superstar Naomi Osaka has been appointed to light the cauldron of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, marking the start of the world's largest sporting championships.
