A Tokyo 2020 Olympic commentator has come under intense scrutiny after making racist comments on television. He said South Korean athletes can't play table tennis because his eyes are narrow!
As reported by Metro.co.uk, it was not appropriate for journalist Dimosthenis Karmiris to appear live at a sports event on Greek television station ERT.
There was a 2020 Tokyo Olympics table tennis match involving Jeoung Youngsik of South Korea and Greek athlete Panagiotis Gionis. When asked about the table tennis abilities of Ginseng Country athletes, Karmiris gave a surprising answer.
"Koreans can't play table tennis," he said.
"Their eyes are so narrow, so I don't understand how they can see the movement of the ball."
Dimosthenis Karmiris's statement was met with a backlash and a sharp spotlight, particularly on social media Twitter. The journalist was called a racist.
"It's 2021 and this is the statement of a state TV presenter to an Asian table tennis player," said a netizen who reshared the video.
"Absolutely ridiculous. And we still wonder where this systemic racism is coming from," another tweeted.
Following the controversy at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, ERT television station reacted immediately. They claim to have severed ties with the racist journalist.
"Racist comments have no place on public television. Today's collaboration between ERT and Dimosthenis Karmiris is over, soon after the event.
