official! Lionel Messi will not extend his contract with Barcelona


It's over the Lionel Messi era at Barcelona. Messi is certainly not going to extend his contract with the Catalan club following deadlocked talks.

Not long ago Messi's future initially seemed to be resolved. The six-time world player was finally willing to stay for the next five years even his salary was cut by 50 percent to help Barcelona's financial crisis.

Messi is even scheduled to sign a new contract with Blaugrana this week. Following a meeting between Barca and the player in the luncheon, Thursday (5/8/2021) local time to complete the deal.

However, the meeting did not go smoothly. According to Marca news, negotiations between Barcelona and Messi are deadlocked and impossible to resolve. Messi was said to be 'never further away from signing a new contract with Barcelona than today'.

As RAC1 reported, Lionel Messi told Barcelona that he would not sign a new contract due to uncertainty about the club's plans and its financial situation.

Barcelona have finally issued an official statement about the 34-year-old footballer's future. Messi will leave Barcelona after more than two decades.
 

 
"Although FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi have reached an agreement and a clear intention from both sides to sign a new contract today, it cannot happen due to financial and structural barriers [to Spanish League regulation]," reads a statement on Barca's official website.

"As a result of this situation, Messi will not stay at FC Barcelona. Both sides are equally very sorry that the expectations of the players and the club in the end were not filled."

"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly thank the player for his contribution to raising the club and wish him the best for the future in spemain both in his personal and professional life."

Lionel Messi has been with Barcelona since 2000. After breaking into the first team in 2004, Messi has made over 750 appearances in all competitions with 672 goals and 305 assists to win more than 30 champions trophies.
